Madeline Dickenscheidt

Madeline is a staff geologist at a Minnesota-based commercial geothermal energy company that is working to make clean energy more efficient, space-conscious, and accessible. A 2025 graduate of the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering, she studied environmental geosciences with a minor in geographic information systems (GIS), combining her long-standing interest in the environment with a passion for technical, science-focused work.

In her role, Madeline conducts geological assessments for potential project sites, evaluating aquifers and determining their capacity to support the thermal load of new systems. She serves as the project geologist in the field, involved at every stage of development — from drilling and sampling to system design and pumping. Her work provides the foundation for system planning, ensuring each design is tailored to the unique conditions of the site to optimize efficiency and meet client needs. While she enjoys being on-site, Madeline especially values the computer-based aspects of her job, which allow her to learn about and analyze diverse geological conditions across the country.

Madeline began as an intern with the company during her senior year of college and transitioned to full-time after graduating. While this is her first formal job, her background in research on water quality and resource conservation prepared her well for the technical challenges of the role. On the job, she has built expertise in well design and field operations, expanding her academic knowledge into practical, clean energy applications.

She is also passionate about reshaping perceptions of geology in the energy industry. While many people associate drilling with oil and gas, Madeline’s work demonstrates how geology is equally vital to renewable energy. Her company’s innovative groundwater-based systems reduce the carbon footprint of buildings — a major source of emissions — without depleting natural resources. By advancing geothermal technology that can be installed in urban areas and with commercial clients like schools and airports, Madeline is helping expand access to affordable, sustainable energy solutions across the Midwest and beyond.
